There are two main ways that your start menu is displayed. XP and Classic.

Start by right clicking on the task bar. This is generally found at the bottom of your screen.
After you right click on the bar you will see this menu. Left click on "Properties".
Clicking on "Properties" will give you this screen. Click on the "Start Menu tab.
Click on "Classic Start Menu" then click on "Apply" The next time you click on the start
menu you will see the change.
