What is a gateway?
A gateway is a router capable device that provides an ADSL connection and multiple user connections without requiring an additional hub. For example the
Actiontec 1520 and 1524 modems have four Ethernet ports built in and also provide a wireless expansion interface.
Why are there Four Ethernet (yellow ports) on the back of the Actiontec 1524 Gateway?
The Actiontec 1524 includes a built-in four-port switch allowing you to connect up to four different PCs to the gateway at one time — without the need for
configuration changes. You will need a straight-through or cross-over Ethernet cable for each PC you want to hook up to the gateway. The four-port switch is
auto-sensing and will automatically detect the type of cable type you use. Additional cables can be purchased at www.actiontecstore.com/qwest.

What are the slots on the left side of the Actiontec 1524?
The slots on the side of the Actiontec 1524 are expansion slots, giving the Actiontec 1524 flexibility to offer additional features in the future. The top
slot is for the Actiontec PC Card wireless adapter.
Why is there a phone port on the back of the Actiontec 1524?
The Actiontec 1524 is provided with a built-in phone port to enable easy installation of a phone next to your gateway. The phone port is pre-filtered and doesn't
require a microfilter.
Why doesn't the Actiontec 1520 have a phone port like other models?
Currently the Actiontec 1520 does not have a built-in phone port. Simply use the splitter provided in your Modem Kit to connect a phone and your gateway through
the same wall jack.
I've run out of Ethernet plugs on my gateway. How do I add more computers?
Plugging in an Ethernet hub or switch can expand the Gateway. Run a standard Ethernet cable from the UPLINK port of your new hub or switch to a standard port on the
Actiontec Gateway.
Which protocols does the Actiontec Gateway support?
The internal LAN connections support multiple protocols (e.g.,TCP/IP, NetBEUI, IPX/SPX, and AppleTalk). The External WAN connection supports only TCP/IP.
What connection speeds does the Actiontec Gateway support?
The LAN connections on the Actiontec Gateway are auto-detecting and support 10Mbps or 100Mbps connections. The WAN connection supports up to 8Mbps downstream and
up to 1Mbps upstream. The 802.11b wireless connection supports up to 11Mbps connection speeds. Wireless speeds vary depending on signal quality, environmental factors
and physical distance.
Do I need an additional DSL modem to use the Actiontec Gateway?
No. The Actiontec 1520 and 1524 Gateways supplied by Qwest DSL have a built-in full-rate DSL modem.
Is the Actiontec Gateway upgradeable? How do I do it?
Yes, the firmware is upgradeable. You can find a link to the firmware site under utilities in the Web-based configuration.
